In the Poetic Diction, as Thor is arriving for his duel with Hrungnir, it says, " Hrungnir shoved his shield under his feet, and stood on it grasping his hone with both hands. At once he saw flashes of lightning and heard great claps of thunder. He was seeing Thor in his divine wrath. " Also in the Poetic Diction, as Thor is attempting to cross a very wide river called Vimur, he braces himself against the rising waters, using the staff called Grid 's stick, given to him by Grid, Vidar the Silents mother, and exclaims : " I happen to be wading through you on my way to the Giants, you know that if you do so will my strength divine until it reaches up as high as heaven. "
From this we can clearly see that Thor can call upon three types of power for his might. His own tremendous muscle power, his redoubled strength from the belt of strength, hammer, and gloves, and finally a divine strength that he draws from the elements themselves, that can reach up to the very heavens. His strength comes from within his body, his soul, and he is able to draw an unseen power from the outside elemental world. Characteristics he obviously inherited from his father Odin, and Jord, the greatest of all elemental powers Mother Earth.
When I was a little child I remember being awed by the raw power of a storm. While my mother would run inside, ( she hid in the bathroom during really bad storms), I would stand on the front porch and watch as the skies darkened, and the flashes of lightning lit up the charcoal colored skies. Instead of being frightened by the intense rumbling of the thunder, which I could feel vibrating through my body at times, I was captivated by it, and also empowered by it. I was always saddened and disappointed when the storm moved off, and the skies cleared. Almost as though I had lost something. At the time I did not understand my fascination with these violent storms, ( my mother sure didn't ), but now I fully comprehend why I enjoyed them so. I believe it was my first contact with the Almighty Thor. Not a one on one contact, but just short glimpses of the raw power that he commands.
Today, as an adult, you will still find me out on my front porch, even in the worst of storms. There is something akin to pride that I feel when the sky booms with thunder, and flashes with lightning. It is hard for me to describe it . It is in my blood, and part of my soul. To truly know Thor, you must understand the great power that he wields throughout the nine worlds. Because Thor in his Divine State is pure energy, the ultimate power !
