Always be yourself,
Unless you can be a Viking,
Then always be a Viking.
I think that in a modern world Odin would rather that we be our real selves, and not some make believe warrior class. If you want to be a warrior join the military and be a warrior for real.
On the flip side of this coin of bringing back the past some in our faith, and culture, are trying to live a simpler and closer life within the natural world, much like our ancestors did in Viking times. They are self - sustaining within a farming environment in which they grow their own food, and have their own livestock. They shun many, but not all, modern conveniences, and try to live within the boundaries of our natural world by not taking more than these natural resources will provide.
Remember not all Scandinavians were Vikings during that wonderful Norse Age. The majority were farmers, herdsmen, craftsmen, shipbuilders, etc... They lived a simple life, ( compared to today ) struggling against the forces of nature, famine, disease, and of course, in that era, the constant threat of war. Those who live this kind of simpler life, in a modern world, honor our ancestors much more than those who dress in period clothes and call themselves Vikings.
The Asatru religion, contrary to what some would have you believe, is not about recreating the Viking Age, or a new warrior class of berserkers, it is about honoring the memories of our ancestors, martyrs, heroes, and of course our wonderful Gods and Goddesses. During many of my rituals I do wear period clothes, but I do this to honor the memories of those who came before me, not to lay claim that I am a Viking in any way, shape or form. We cannot become the people that our ancestors were. They were unique in history and cannot be replicated ! The same goes for the weapons that I display on my altars. They are not there to show the Gods that I am a Viking, but merely to honor those ancestors who were truly Vikings . To be a true Viking you would have to plunder and raid, and in doing so be recognized for your brave deeds. This is something that can no longer be duplicated ( outside of the military ) in a modern world.
I also would like to mention that I find it hard to believe that a wise God such as Odin would allow himself to not always move forward, but regress back to the past. Odin is a God with a clear vision of the past, present, and future, who uses his wisdom, knowledge and keen common sense to always find a better way to " do " things. Such a Deity would never step back to an earlier time, and ignore new intelligence, and better ways to live ones life just to recreate an earlier time. Odin would NEVER ignore the truth of change and remain stagnate in an ever evolving world.
Honor the past my friends, but live in the reality of the present !
( And of course always work for a better tomorrow ! )
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja' s love, and Thor's protection !
