Njord : The Jealous God
Njord Confronts Ullr
Ullr reached behind his back, pulled an arrow from his quiver, and placed it on his bow string without ever taking his eyes off of Njord. Ullr kept his bow pointed at the ground as he shouted up to Njord : " Why have you come to my home here in Ydalir sea God ? " Njord froze ! He had tried to be as quiet as he possibly could as he came down the mountain, and was surprised that he had been spotted . In his mind he had been moving as quietly as a predator stalking his prey through the snow. " I have come to tell you to stay away from my wife, and to never again travel to see her in Thrymheim ! " Njord shouted in reply. " Do you speak with your tongue Vanir God, or do you intend to make that point with your sword ?! " Ullr asked. " If my words are not sharp enough to dissuade you, I assure you that I am not afraid to empower them with my razor sharp sword ! " Njord replied.
Ullr laughed " What idiot would come to a land covered in snow wearing clothes as dark as Svartalfheim ! I could spot him from almost any distance ! " the archer God said to himself. " You do not belong in my realm Njord ! You are out of your element here on my lands sea God ! " he shouted over to the Vanir God. " Besides, if you were more of a husband to your wife this confrontation would not be necessary ! " he added angrily. Njord was infuriated by Ullr's brash words ! " You are a man with no honor Ullr ! To tempt a woman when her husband is away is the work of a coward ! " Njord shot back. Ullr laughed so loudly that it echoed through the valley. " Well at least I am a man ! From what I have witnessed your are not much of a man, or a husband....... or a God for that matter ! " Ullr shouted to Njord.
Njord had reached his limit ! The Vanir God gave out a great roar, and began to cross the slope of the base of the mountain to the hill where he had caught glimpses through the trees of the archer. The sea God dodged in between small trees and brush on the way, but as he avoided a larger tree he tripped over a protruding root, and fell face down in the snow. Njord quickly picked himself up as he screamed in anger and frustration. When he looked up again to gain his bearings, Ullr was no longer there ! Njord quickly jumped back behind the large tree he had just fell over, and waited for Ullr to show himself again.
Ullr moved a few feet out of sight of Njord when he saw him fall. From his new vantage point he could see that Njord was hiding behind a tree because his leg was sticking out, giving his position away. Ullr smiled : " Alright ! You want to fight.... then lets fight ! " he said to himself as he pulled his bow string back, and took careful aim. The archer God released the arrow with practiced ease, and watched as the arrow ran straight and true. Ullr was mad, but he did not want to kill Njord so he aimed for the fleshy part of his exposed leg. As the arrow tore through the skin on Njord' s leg he fell to his knees in pain. " As I told you sea God, you are out of your element in my valley. This is my domain ! I, and I alone, rule here ! " Ullr shouted angrily.
Njord had had enough ! He reached down and broke off the shaft of the arrow. He then came around the tree, and stood facing Ullr. Njord raised his hands, and made a motion as though he was pushing on something. Suddenly a wind of immense force blew up, and shot at great velocity towards Ullr. As it picked up speed it also picked up the powdery snow, and formed a blizzard of such force that it blew Ullr out of his hiding place, blew his bow away, and threw the archer God violently up against a tree ! Njord saw his opportunity and used the cover of the blizzard he had created to walk around the storm and come up behind Ullr. When he felt he was close enough he made the storm fade as quickly as he had summoned it.
As Ullr picked himself up off of the ground he spotted a figure close by out of the corner of his eye. " Now that you can no longer hide behind your bow, like a woman, I will show you what kind of a God I am archer ! " Njord yelled at Ullr as he drew his sword. " I do not need a bow to stop you, and your magic tricks Vanir God ! " Ullr shot back as he drew his own sword . The talking was over, and now the life and death struggle was about to begin !
