The Fire Dragon's Quest
( Part Three Of The Ítreksjóð Trilogy )
" Let The Midgardians Deal With It ! "
" Why should the Dwarves, or the Jotuns, be cursed by this wretched coin ? " he asked himself before finishing the thought.
" Why not let the Midgardians deal with it ! " he whispered to himself.
Loki's evil mind devises plots at a speed that no other being can possibly hope to match. Most, if not all, would have simply dropped the coin in Midgard, and waited for some unsuspecting fool to pick it up to become the next victim of the coin's curse. But that was too easy for the Mischief Maker, and he saw no fun in doing it that way either.
Farbauti's son remembered that in the region known as the Northway, or simply Norge to the inhabitants, there was a long standing feud between King Rolleifr of East Agder, and King Nefgeirr of West Agder. Both wanted to unite their lands into one huge kingdom by getting rid of the other, but neither had yet found a way to do so. And the reason for this standoff was that Odin was helping Neffgeir, while Frigga was aiding Rolleifr. Loki, who loved to be a thorn in Odin's side, decided to pay King Rolleifr a visit.
Rolleifr was about to have some fun with his mistresses Sigdrif, and Finna, when he heard someone clear their throat behind him. Realizing that he was without sword, or any weapon at all for that matter, he quickly spun around to confront the intruder with his bare hands. What the naked king saw when he turned around made him freeze. For there, standing before him, was a very large man dressed in the finest of clothes that only another king would wear.
" How dare you enter my hall without permission ! " he yelled at the stranger.
Loki grinned from ear to ear.
" Send the females away ! I have something of great importance to discuss with you. " the Mischief Maker told him calmly.
King Rolleifr's eyes widened with anger and surprise as he reacted to being ordered around by this stranger.
" I will have your head for this ! " he yelled back at the unwanted visitor.
Loki's grin grew even wider.
" Then I guess that you do not want to hear how I can help you defeat King Nefgeirr ? " he asked nonchalantly.
King Rolleifr's expression changed instantly.
" I am listening ! " the king replied in a much calmer tone.
Loki raised his voice a little as he pointed to the door.
" Send away the females and we will talk ! " Loki told the king again.
King Rolleifr reluctantly motioned for the girls to leave with one hand, while he grabbed his clothes with the other. The girls both smiled at Loki as they left, and the Mischief Maker in turn winked at them. When the door shut, Rolleifr, despite still trying to dress himself, asked :
" Well they are gone ! What is it that you have to say ? "
Loki pulled the coin out of his pocket and held it up to the light. As it sparkled in the flickering light from the torch, the trickster pointed to it with the index finger of his other hand.
" This will win you what you most want in this world,... this will make you king of a united Agder ! " he explained to Rolleifr.
The king frowned.
" You made me send away my mistresses to show me a gold coin ? ! Before I kill you tell me how one coin can help me to defeat my enemy King Nefgeirr ? " the king asked in disbelief.
First of all, from what I saw of you, the girls would have been greatly disappointed. However, to answer your question, this coin has been cursed by a fire dragon. " Loki told the king.
King Rolleifr nodded as though he had figured out what his visitor was telling him.
" So,.... we give the coin to King Nefgeirr, and the curse kills him,.... right ? " he replied, now less than confident in his conclusion.
Loki hung his head low, and shook his head back and forth slowly with disgust.
" You humans have such small thoughts ! If King Nefgeirr dies another king will reign in his stead, and you will have gained nothing ! " he explained to the king in a greatly annoyed tone.
Rolleifr shrugged his shoulders to show that he was still not following what the stranger was saying.
" Then,...... " he prodded Loki to continue.
Loki took a deep breath before going on.
" A coin that is cursed can be placed into the hilt of a special sword which will allow the wielder, of said sword, to kill anyone who opposes him. " Loki explained to the king slowly so that he would understand what he was trying to tell him.
King Rolleifr nodded.
" I will have the local blacksmith make a sword hilt that the coin can be placed in,...... and then I will ride to West Agder at the head of my army and smite my enemies ! " the king boasted confidently.
Loki shook his head again.
" Well ! Before you go " a smiting " the sword will have to be forged with magical properties by the Earth Dwarves. I would suggest the sons of Ivaldi, or possibly Brokk and Eitri. Only they can forge a sword in such a way that the curse will work to it's fullest. " Loki corrected the king.
King Rolleifr's smile went away, and he looked at this stranger suspiciously .
" Dwarves do not really exist ! And by the way,..... who are you ? " the king asked.
Loki grinned at the perplexed king of East Agder.
" I assure you that Dwarves do exist ! And I,... well,... I am Loki, son of Farbauti, and blood brother to Odin! " he replied in a boastful tone.
King Rolleifr reached for his sword.
" And I am Beowulf, you lying bastard ! " the king yelled at the stranger as he swung the sword at his head.
The blade met only air as the visitor disappeared as quickly as he had come.
Stunned by his sudden disappearance, Rolleifr quickly looked all around the hall to find the one who claimed to be Loki.
A moment later, and right before his eyes, the stranger slowly turned from a misty image into a whole living being.
Rolleifr threw his sword on the bed and nervously nodded his head.
" Well, ....ahhh,....., alright then,... ahhh,.... Loki was it,.... I think that might be a pretty good plan. " he told the Jotun while trying not to let him see that his hands were shaking with fear.
Loki grinned sarcastically.
" I thought you might see it my way ! " Loki replied.
