The Queen Of Pain
A Man With No Shame
King Kaldstein could not believe that his wife was not ready yet ! The king thought he had made himself quite clear when he explained to Birsla the importance of his meeting with Nesbjorn, the Chieftain of Sokndal, about the long ships that Nesbjorn, and his people had been tasked to build, but had yet to deliver. And not only was she still not ready to leave, but she had not even bothered to join him for breakfast this morning, which further angered Kaldstein !
Brettifa was having a hard time dressing Queen Brisla. Merely getting Brisla out of bed this morning had been quite a chore, dressing her was almost an impossibility. When Brettifa helped to remove the queen's nightgown she quickly discovered why. Brisla had deep bruises up and down her legs, and a nasty yellow mark, about the size of the king's fist, stained her inner thigh.
The handmaiden always felt uncomfortable looking the queen in the eyes at times such as this. And today more so than usual because the king had not restricted his sadistic abuse to parts of Brisla's body that could not be seen when fully clothed. Even in the dim light of the great hall Brettifa could see that the queen's right eye was practically swollen shut, and her left cheek was much redder than the right.
Vetr, the commander of the Royal Guard, remained behind the curtain that divided the great hall from the bed chamber. In a hoarse whisper he called out to Brettifa :
" Brettifa ! Please Hurry ! The king is becoming increasingly irritated by this delay !! " he warned the woman that he was betrothed to.
Brettifa felt helpless ! How was she to go faster when the queen was battered and bruised ! She was doing her absolute best to get the queen ready to travel, but it was not an easy task by any means.
" I am almost finished ! I just need to tie her boots ! " she called back to the man she loved with all her heart.
A few moments later Brettifa and Queen Brisla emerged from behind the curtain . King Kaldstein quickly stepped forward in a manner most menacing, and put his face so close to the handmaiden's that his nose almost touched hers.
" I don't know why my wife chose you as her handmaiden. You are such a lazy bitch ! " the king screamed.
Vetr placed his hand firmly on the king's shoulder, and turned him slightly. Kaldstein gave his commander an angry look, but the look Vetr gave him in return gave the king reason to control himself.
" My Lord ! I believe that we are already very late ! " he told the king with a hint of anger.
King Kaldstein was a brave man around those who were much smaller, weaker, or of the opposite sex, but when confronted by an equal, he almost always backed down. A fact that Vetr knew all too well.
" Yes ! Yes !! You are right Vetr ! " the king quickly agreed.
The king reached out and grabbed his wife by the wrist and pulled her behind him like a dog on a leash.
" Even Freyja does not take as long to dress as you do ! Come on, we must leave now ! " he shouted angrily.
Vetr and Brettifa watched helplessly as the queen was yanked behind the king to the front door of the hall. Kaldstein, seemingly oblivious to his wife's moaning, opened the door and threw her out in the courtyard, where she fell in front of the horses that were saddled and waiting.
The queen's personal guards, Nafni, and Unnvaldr, who were waiting just outside the door, ran over and picked the queen up off of the ground. After brushing her off they helped the queen, who was in obvious pain, onto her horse.
" Damned bitch is always falling ! " the king said under his breath as he placed his foot into the stirrups on his saddle.
Nafni and Unnvaldr gave each other angry looks. How were they to protect the queen, when the one doing her harm was the king himself !
Brettifa and Vetr were next to exit the hall. Unlike the king, Vetr escorted his bride to be to her horse, and gently helped her up into her saddle. Just as Brettifa settled on her white horse, Ragnvaldr, the commander of the army rode up and stopped next to King Kaldstein.
The king pointed to the couple, and shook his head.
" Why, what a touching scene ! " the king said with a smirk on his face.
" Shall I have one of my skalds write a verse about it ? " Kaldstein asked sarcastically to no one in particular.
Ragnvaldr gave a short chuckle, but restrained himself when he saw that Vetr was not amused. Brettifa, however was hurt by the remark and looked down at her lover with tears in her eyes.
" How can the Gods allow a man with no shame to rule over Their children ? " she asked in a low whisper.
Vetr, not caring what the others thought, kissed Brettifa on the hand.
" Well ! Possibly, my soon to be wife, you should invoke the Gods, and ask them to help our queen, and punish her tormentor. " he replied in a hoarse whisper.
King Kaldstein sighed when he saw Vetr kiss her hand.
" If you two lovers are quite finished I would like to leave now ! " the king told the couple in a comical but sarcastic tone.
" Yes, my Lord ! " Vetr replied, and then mounted his own horse.
After they had gone the house servants Gilla and Metta came out of the shadows of the great hall, where they had been quietly mending the queen's torn clothes.
" How do you think the queen fared this time ? " Metta asked.
Gilla rolled her eyes, and shrugged her shoulders, before replying.
" Judging by the way her clothes are ripped and tattered I would think that she would not be in any shape to travel ! " Gilla replied nervously.
Metta shook her head .
" I think that one day soon the king will kill her ! " the maiden said sadly.
