The New Seer Of Hårteigen
The body of the old seer Grottintanna, by contrast, was treated with the utmost kindness and respect. She was bathed in herbs by her daughter Kjallandi, and dressed in the finest clothes that King Siggautr and Queen Bera could find in the Northlands. She was then entombed, with many elaborate grave goods for her afterlife, on top of Hårteigen, in a secret location.
A few months later Queen Bera gave birth to twins who were identical in every way but two. The first born boy had blonde hair and bright blue eyes like his parents, while the second child had red hair and eyes that were as black as Grottintanna's eyes had been.
The blonde haired child they named Tyrfingr, and just as the old seer had predicted he one day became the king, not only of Haddingjadlr, but also territory that once belonged to Valdres and Hringariki as well. He was considered a great king in the Northlands in a time before the region was unified into one kingdom.
Their second child, who they named Sviar, after Grottintanna's husband, grew to be as tall and muscular as his brother, but his duty was not to guard a kingdom, but to marry and protect Kjallandi, who had become a very powerful seer. Her predictions, made by looking into the client's eyes, or in a pool of water, was one of the reasons Tyrfingr was able not only to defend his father's kingdom, but expand and enrich his lands.
Kjallandi and Sviar had but one child. She grew up in the same small cave as her grandmother and mother, but she was much more powerful than either. She could see the future as they could, in fire and water, but she could also view what was to come in dreams. And this child, by the time she became an adult, had the ability to do something that neither Grottintanna or Kjallandi could manage. This mighty witch had the ability, and great strength of will, to change the future to prevent tragedies, and allow good to prevail over evil. This seer would be visited by the kings of Haddingjadalr many many times over the coming decades. She would be known as the Grottinandi, the great seer of Hårteigen.
