Chapter 1
Evil Is Born
Odin was furious ! As the Lord of Asgard paced back and forth in his golden hall all he could hear in his mind were the words that Sigyn had spoken to him. She had come to him crying hysterically, and was seeking his help and guidance. What she told the All - Father shocked him more than anything else ever had before. Sigyn had explained to Odin that her husband, Loki, had been unfaithful and fathered three children with the Giantess Angrboda. And from the way Sigyn described his offspring they sounded more like monsters than would could be considered by most to be normal children.
The All- Father never liked to hear only one side of a story, so he summoned Loki to his golden hall to explain the situation in person. If it had been anyone else Odin would have struck down the individual for Sigyn's sake, but Loki had once saved his life, and since that fateful day the two had become blood - oathed brothers. The Lord of Asgard, at the very least, felt he owed his brother Loki the chance to tell his side of the story.
Odin had put up with much from Loki over the many years since they met. The Jotun, who was now accepted as a God, had developed a bad reputation for causing trouble among the Aesir, and the Vanir. The son of the Giant Farbauti, and the Giantess Laufey, had become known in Asgard, and Alfheim, as the Mischief Monger, The Trickster, The Disgrace of the Gods, and now due to his latest despicable act, The Father of Lies ! Loki was barely tolerated by most in Asgard, and was even hated by some. Especially when he drank !
What Odin could not get straight in his mind, however, was why Loki would go behind his wife's back and father children with another female. And a Giantess at that ! Loki had a wonderful devoted wife in the Goddess Sigyn, and together they had two wonderful boys named Vali and Narfi. " Why would he jeopardize all he has for a Giantess !? " Odin asked himself over and over again.
When Loki arrived at Odin's great hall he was as cocky as ever. Not only was he not ashamed of his latest indiscretion, but he had brought to Odin's abode that which he had spawned with the Giantess Angrboda to proudly show them off to his blood brother. All - Father, however, was not impressed with the Trickster's odd little family, and he told Loki of his great displeasure !
Loki, brash as ever, reminded his blood brother about the time he, the great Odin, had slept for three nights with the Giantess Gunnlod to steal the mead of poetry from Suttung. Odin countered Loki's argument by explaining that he pleasured Gunnlod, that beautiful fair maiden, to retrieve what had been stolen from the Gods. Loki, in turn, replied that he saw no difference between the two incidents other than the fact that his pleasure had brought forth three children.
" Children ! " Odin cried out angrily. " Look at these abominations ! " he screamed as he pointed to Loki's offspring. " You have spawned a mangy evil wolf, a slithering hissing serpent, and an ugly two faced monster ! " he added pointing his finger in Loki' s face. Odin shook his head in disbelief. " How can you be proud of what you have done ? " he asked his blood brother.
Loki's eyes narrowed, and his brow creased. " I see that I, along with my children, are no longer welcome here in your hall. So I will take my family, that you obviously find so repulsive, and leave at once ! " Loki told Odin, as he turned and guided his brood back toward the doors of the great golden hall.
Loki had a big surprise, however, when he opened the huge heavy doors. For standing outside the hall, blocking his way, stood the Gods of Asgard . Thor, Tyr, Balder, Bragi, Freyr, Heimdall, Hermod, and Forseti, stood as firm as the great wall that surrounded Asgard, and prevented the Lord of Mischief from leaving.
Odin slammed his great spear Gungnir hard against the floor twice, which created a great echo through the great hall. " You Loki may leave ..... but your offspring will remain here until I can decide what to do with them ! " he told his blood brother in a commanding voice.
Loki quickly turned and faced Odin. " If you hurt my children, then I will in turn retaliate and harm one of your precious sons Odin ! " Loki shot back in a fit of anger. Loki then pushed his way passed the Gods, and left the golden hall in a great hurry.
That night, while his fellow Asgardians kept watch over Loki' s children, Odin mounted his great horse Sleipnir and rode down the great world tree to consult the Seeress. He learned from the old witch that the Gods would meet with great misfortune on account of Loki's evil children. When Odin heard this distressing news he decided that it was time to act !
Odin quickly returned to his great hall, but he was greatly disappointed to find that Loki had deceived the Gods of Asgard. The Lord of Lies had not actually brought his children with him to the hall. Using a trick he had learned from Utgard - Loki, he had simply projected their images to gauge what Odin's reaction would be towards them. Over a period of time they faded from sight like the morning mist before the blazing sun.
Odin, in a fit of rage, traveled to Hlidskjalf, and from his golden seat in his silver hall, spotted Loki hiding in a cave deep in a mountain in Jotunheim. The Mischief Monger thought that he could hide from the Asgardians, but from up on Hlidskjalf nothing is hidden from Odin's eye ! The Gods mounted their horses, and carts, and quickly traveled to Jotunheim. They were led by the gleaming light that shone from Freyr's mount the great bristled boar Gullinborsti.
The Gods quickly captured Angrboda' s evil children, but Loki, as devious as ever, was again able to escape by turning himself into a squirrel and scurrying off before the Gods realized what had happened. Thor, who was very angry at their failure to capture Loki, used his mighty hammer Mjolnir to destroy the entire mountain.
The Gods brought Fenrir, Jormungandr, and Hel, before Odin. Because the All - Father did not want to spill blood in his sacred hall, he gave Fenrir to Tyr to feed and care for. Hel he threw into Niflheim, and he gave her dominion over the dead of the nine worlds who died of old age and sickness. There was one small provision, however. Hel was forced to share what little she had with all the multitude of dead who came to live with her.
The serpent Jormungandr repulsed Odin the most, and he wished to never see the slithering, hissing monster again. All - Father decided to personally take it upon himself to dispose of the great dragon. Odin borrowed the ship the dwarves had made for Freyr, called Skidbladnir, and sailed to the middle of the great Midgardian ocean, where the water's depth was greatest. And there Valfather threw it overboard. As he watched it slowly sink into the deep water Odin thought it gone forever. But the oceans of Midgard are a realm in and of themselves, and what was once a problem for Odin, and Asgard, was about to become a disaster for those who ruled the great Midgardian oceans !
