The Uninvited

Epilogue

The Long Wait

Picture
Jormungandr, the great Midgard Serpent, kept to its part of the bargain and remained on the bottom of the ocean for millennium after millennium. There on the sea floor, with the pressure of miles of salt water pressing down upon it's body, the creature rested, and waited for the day when his father Loki would return to bring it back up from these great depths that had become both its home, and its prison.

The daughters of Aegir and Ran also maintained their pledge, and cared for the great beast that lurked in the darkness of the deepest part of Midgard's oceans. For many years Kolga, Dufa, Blodughadda, Hefring, Unn, Hronn, Bylgja, Drofn, and of course Himinglaeva, swam down to the sea floor and faithfully fed the great beast every day to make certain that the serpent would not venture back up to the surface again.

Over time the creature grew so large that its body stretched all around the Midgardian world. So large in fact that its tail circumnavigated the globe and rested next to its head . When Jormungandr reached its maximum length only one of the wave maidens was brave enough to feed the great beast. In much the same way that Tyr was the only God who would feed, and take care of Fenrir, Himinglaeva was the only sea maiden who was fearless enough to still care for the great sea serpent.

At about the same time that Fenrir was fettered by the Gods, and Loki kept to his pledge of injuring one of Odin' s sons if the Valfather hurt any of his children, Jormungandr would no longer eat the food that Himinglaeva brought for it. The great sea serpent placed its tail in its mouth, and closed its eyes to sleep. For the great beast knew that it had a long wait before it would be reunited with its family.

At first little Himinglaeva continued to bring the creature food, but when it became apparent it would not feed, she stopped. Still the sea maiden visited the sea snake everyday. She would float by its massive head and stroke its cheek and head for quite some time. Occasionally she would even sleep next to the beast.

If Himinglaeva had only known what the snake was waiting for she would have been much too afraid to venture down to visit the Midgard Serpent. For when the world begins to shake, and Loki and Fenrir free themselves from their bonds, the great sea creature known as Jormungandr will rise up out of the depths, and wreak havoc upon the nine worlds...... and it will seek revenge on the God who holds the mighty hammer !
