When Magic Ruled The Worlds
The little Dwarf responded groggily to his name being shouted as he tried to overcome the unsettling feeling of passing out, brought on by what he had witnessed.
" What, ...., what ?! " he asked as if in a drunken stupor.
" Get your lazy ass off of the ground, and press this cloth tightly against her wound so I can use my magic to heal her ! " he shouted impatiently at the shaken Dwarf.
As if he had been awakened from a horrific nightmare Vilmeid suddenly came out of his mind fog, and though still quite shaken by what had happened, he rose up on trembling legs and made his way over to where Vidolf lay helpless and bleeding on the ground. Before he knelt down to relieve the little Elf, he looked into the eyes of the Giantess and saw something most unsettling. She was no longer the proud strong Giantess that they had left Jotunheim with. As he stared deep into the windows of her soul he saw that she was afraid,..., very, very afraid.
Realizing that he was not alone in being terrified by these horrific creatures, which none of them truly understood, gave him a renewed strength, which allowed him to place his hands on the blood soaked cloth that was keeping the Giantess from bleeding to death.
" It will be alright. Svarthofdi will heal you my friend. " he told the Giantess in a soothing voice, as he gently pressed the fabric down on the gushing wound.
The little Elf wasted no time ! He stepped a few feet away from their injured friend, pulled out his wand, took a few short moments to compose a spell, and then with great determination reached out his right hand to the heavens to allow his wand to capture the cosmic energy that hopefully would heal the Jotuness.
" Across the vast universe, to this humble place please bring the power to heal,
For only with this great cosmic energy, her many injuries I will be able to seal,
From inside out, and through her entire body, treat her bones, and torn flesh,
Make her whole, and force that which is damaged to once again flow and mesh."
" I will stand here forever, if that is what it will take, even beg if I must at great length,
For only through light and stellar power can my good friend gain back her strength,
I tell you now that our great friend has fought hard, and surely deserves your tending,
And if it should become necessary, I will forfeit my life for the power you will be sending. "
Vilmeid glanced up at the little Elf with a startled look plastered upon his face, for he had gained an even higher respect for the sorcerer. After a moment of soul searching he asked himself if the roles were reversed would he have the inner fortitude to make the ultimate sacrifice for a friend. Sadly, he was uncertain that in a moment as dire in nature as this, he could offer up his life for another.
Quickly, however, the Dwarf's attention switched away from his own inadequacies to a new dilemma. At first it was only the wand which glowed brightly, but soon Svarthofdi's entire body began to shine like the corona around the yellow Midgardian sun. Then, to his horror, he noticed this magical light begin to drift, like a morning mist, towards the body of the Giantess. For a moment Vilmeid considered letting go of the bloody cloth, and backing away from her, but his courage had been bolstered sufficiently by the little Elf's unflinching desire to save the Giantess, for him to remain in place.
" If I am to die, let it be quick ! " Vilmeid whispered to himself as he continued to administer a gentle pressure to Vidolf's wound.
As Svarthofdi continued to repeat his spell over and over Vilmeid closed his eyes, and awaited whatever fate had been weaved for him. As time slowly passed an anger began to grow within the Dwarf. When it reached a boiling point, which he could no longer contain, he released his fury in a rant that echoed throughout the marshlands.
" What do you want from us ! We have braved raging seas, intolerable heat, and creatures almost too horrific to have imagined ! What right do you have to take one as brave as Vidolf ! For that matter, what right do you have to let any of us die before we have finished the task that has been set down before us ! " he cried out angrily.
When his tirade ended Vilmeid began to weep and soon joined the little sorcerer in repeating his magical chant. His voice was much louder than Svarthofdi's, which quickly drowned out the Elf's words. So much so that Vilmeid did not realize when Svarthofdi stopped chanting. And despite several attempts by the Elf to apprise him of this change, he did not hear Svarthofdi when he tried to speak to him. He did, however, feel something touch him on the shoulder !
Vilmeid stopped chanting immediately, and his eyes shot open, when he felt a weight upon his shoulder.
" What the,...... ! " he shouted as he let go of the blood soaked cloth and fell backwards.
Svarthofdi could not help but smile at the Dwarf's comical reaction, and despite his friends obvious annoyance at what he had done, he pointed calmly over at Vidolf.
" The cosmos have been generous this day, my friend. Vidolf is still quite weak, but I assure you that she will live. " he told his surprised comrade.
Moments later Vidolf's eyes fluttered open, and she looked up at Svarthofdi. Despite her condition the Giantess managed a weak smile.
" Thank you ! " she whispered in a coarse voice.
Slowly the Giantess tilted her head to the side, and glanced up at Vilmeid.
" I thank you both for my life ! " she managed before succumbing to her weariness, and falling asleep.
Vilmeid watched Vidolf for a moment as she rested, and then turned back to the Elf with a broad grin upon his face.
" I guess the Norns decided not to take you today. " he announced a bit sarcastically.
Svarthofdi glared at the Dwarf for a moment before replying.
" No ! Not this day. " he told Vilmeid without hesitation.
Realizing his remark was in poor taste Vilmeid looked away from Svarthofdi in shame. As he did he noticed the blood soaked cloth which now lay on the ground next to the Giantess. He grimaced as he nodded.
" I am sorry, my friend. I misspoke. Let us hope that that day never comes for any of us. " he replied solemnly.
