The Fire Dragon's Quest
( Part Three Of The Ítreksjóð Trilogy )
Loki Comes To His Father's Aid
" Yes ! Yes !! I am Coming ! " he screamed over the echo of the bashing the ice doors were being subjected to.
Stigandi threw open the doors, ready to give the Frost Giant on the other side a piece of his mind, when to his surprise he suddenly realized that it was Farbauti who was trying to gain entrance into the Ice Palace.
" My Lord ! You are late ! I expected your return days ago ! " Stigandi told Farbauti in rapid succession.
The Lord of the Frost Giants gave his palace guard an icy stare.
" Why did it take you so long to open the doors ? ! " Farbauti asked suspiciously.
Stigandi thought for an awkwardly long moment before answering.
" I was in the rear of the palace, my Lord ! " he explained finally.
Farbauti gave his subordinate a look of disbelief.
" No doubt sitting on my ice throne sleeping ! " Farbauti said angrily.
Stigandi did not like where this line of questioning was going, and quickly changed the subject.
" Why did it take you so long to return to Jotunheim ? " the guard asked.
Farbauti's eyes filled with hatred, and his face lost it's blue tint, as he remembered what had happened in Svartalfheim.
" Those bastard son's of Thor killed Hríðarbylur, and I had to walk back to Jotunheim ! " he told Stigandi bitterly.
" But at least I rid myself , and my kingdom, of that cursed coin ! " he told Stigandi as he patted his pocket.
Stigandi was about to agree with the Frost Giant Lord when he noticed that Farbauti's eyes had suddenly doubled in size, presumably from fear.
" What is it my Lord ! ? " the palace guard asked nervously.
Farbauti pulled the tiny coin from his pocket, and held it up in front of his eyes, before he answered.
" Durinn is such a tricky little worm ! Now how did that bastard put the coin back in my pocket ? ! " he asked angrily.
Stigandi stepped away from the coin as though it were about to bite him.
" I do not know my Lord, but you must get rid of it at once ! " he implored his king.
Farbauti shook his head in disgust.
" To do that I will need someone who is even more mischievous than the Dwarves ! " he told his guard.
Loki, always one to make a grand entrance, used a bit of magic to open the doors that were always kept locked by his father. As they flew outward, Stigandi, who had been leaning up against the left door, fell backwards onto the landing at the top of the ice stairs. Loki laughed at the odd way he had fallen, before stepping over him and entering the great Ice Palace.
Unimpressed by Loki's bravado Stigandi shook his fist at the Mischief Maker as he passed over him.
" Why can't you simply knock ! " he yelled at Farbauti's son.
Loki stopped and looked back at the livid palace guard.
" What fun would there be in that ?! " he asked with a snicker.
Loki turned and strutted up the main aisle to the ice throne, where his father sat with an angry scowl upon his face. Undeterred by his father's impatient stare, Loki took his time as he made his way to the Lord of Jotunheim.
" I have heard that the great Farbauti needs my help. Well ! Let it never be said that Loki did not come to his father's aid ! " he announced as though he were giving a great speech.
Farbauti was in no mood for Loki's showmanship !
" Do you know what this is ? ! " he asked his son as he held up the coin for him to see.
" Now how did the great Farbauti come to own a cursed Asgardian coin ? " he asked, already knowing the whole story.
Farbauti narrowed his eyes, and leaned forward, as he replied to his son's insolence :
" What matters is not how I got it, but how I am going to get rid of the cursed thing ! " he shouted at his son.
" Simply give it back to the Dwarves. " Loki replied with a smile.
Farbauti bit his lip out of pure frustration.
" I already tried that,.... the Dwarf Durinn tricked me and somehow slipped it back into my pocket ! " he told his son reluctantly.
Loki raised his eyebrows and giggled.
" My ! You really do need my help now don't you ! ? " he answered smugly.
Loki reached out and took the coin from his father and studied it for a moment. While holding the cursed coin in his left hand he " pinged " it with his right forefinger, and then held it up to his ear. Immediately Loki's gin turned into a grimace.
" I will take care of this for you father,.... but I must leave at once ! " he told him before quickly banging his spear on the floor.
In a great flash of light Loki was gone from the hall, leaving Farbauti to wonder why his son had departed so suddenly. A moment later the reason his son left so abruptly became all too apparent as a loud roar echoed throughout Jotunheim. Farbauti seldom if ever felt fear, but as the roar of the great dragon came closer and closer the Lord of the Frost Giants was unnerved by the only thing that frightened all Frost Giants. And that one thing was fire !
