I recently, after visiting an ancestors grave in Cranbury, New Jersey, wrote an Ancestral Rite to all those who came before me. I was moved by the sacrifices that he made during the Revolutionary War for our country and our family. It made me think of all that members of my family had to sacrifice just so I could carry on their good name. Remember in the days of old there were no fast food chains or modern supermarkets. They had to grow and make all their own food, a backbreaking and time consuming endeavor, or they would go hungry. My first ancestors had to build their own houses and stables as well. You really had to be multi-talented in those days to survive and prosper. And my family, like yours did of course! That is why we have the lives that we have today.
In addittion to the Ancestral Rite that I wrote in their honor I also wrote the following Oath to Var and dedicated it to my mother who passed away in 2006. May she be resting and feasting in Gimle even now as I write!
Oath to Var
I am the culmination of all those who came before me,
Their hard work, love and perserverance allowed me to exist.
My soul contains a fragment of each and every one of them.
To honor them I must work hard and do the best I can in all endeavors.
I feel their watchful eyes upon me,
I know I am being judged.
Because they live in me and through me I must honor their memory.
For them I must succeed !

I hope that all of you do not forget those who came before you. They deserve to be honored and loved now and forever.
Go with Odin' s wisdom, Freyja' s love and Thor' s protection !
