294. Final Glory
But time shows no mercy, and now he had grown old.
Lately the grey warrior had not been feeling as strong,
He had been spitting up blood, felt his time was not long.
Suddenly, one cold day, Hogni broke out in a terrible sweat,
And then in secret, with Hildigunnr the village healer he met.
The medicine woman examined Hogni, then shook her head,
Sadly she told the old warrior that he very soon would be dead.
Now Hogni had seen far too many sick old warriors in bed lie,
And he did not want this to be the pitiful way that he would die.
He decided at once that he would go out in a blaze of glory,
In a battle so epic that the skalds for years would tell his story.
Hogni immediately joined up with Jarl Egil' s Viking warrior band,
Sailed with them over rough water to that foreign English land.
Egil reluctantly added him on, hoped his men Hogni would teach,
But Hogni was ready to fight the moment they landed on the beach.
The final battle began in a flowering meadow, the fighting was quite fierce,
Hogni fought hard, proved himself worthy, till his heart the arrow did pierce.
He lay injured on the flowering battlefield, his death took quite a while,
But when Hogni took his last breath, on his bloodied face was a smile.
