300. Rollo ( Norwegian Version )
He was a Viking raider whose lineage would change the world,
Called Hrolf by the Norse, he comes down to us as Rollo in history,
He lived an incredible life, surrounded by a cloud of great mystery.
Rollo was a big man, whose fighting skills were very great,
So huge in fact he could not ride on a horse due to his weight,
The Norsemen called him "Ganger", ( the walker ), as his nickname,
And this warrior strode around Møre with lawlessness as his game.
Rollo quickly fell out of favor with Harald Fairhair, the Norwegian king,
So the warrior left before he could feel the monarch' s sharp sting,
Later, Rollo sailed to the land of the Franks with the Viking Sigfred,
And from the Frankish shores to Paris these Norse raiders were led.
Sigfred was given much tribute, and that Viking raided Paris no more,
But mighty Rollo stayed behind, this warrior continued on as before,
Finally, our great hero was sent off by the Franks to Burgundy to harry,
And with him Rollo took as much Danegeld as he could possibly carry.
Rollo, like many of the Vikings, returned again for more silver and gold,
The great amount of Danegeld he was paid simply made him more bold,
Once again he attacked Paris, then a siege on the city of Chartres he laid,
This time, however, it was not in gold or silver the great warrior was paid.
Joseaume ,the Bishop of Chartres, faced off against Rollo on a great battlefield,
And the Rollo lead Viking raiders, with heavy losses, were finally forced to yield.
King Charles had grown tired of all these Norsemen he constantly had to fight,
He made a decision that it would be prudent to find a better use for Rollo's might.
Charles the Simple granted the Viking Rollo land from the Epte down to the sea,
And in return these Norse warriors would protect his coast, and let his Franks be,
Rollo, now a Duke, stayed true to his word, and defended the shores of the Seine,
And it was here in the Duchy of Normandy that he began his long fifty year reign.
When King Charles was deposed in the the year nine hundred and twenty two,
The Duke of Normandy decided that his oath to the old king was no longer his due,
The transplanted Viking began a long period of expansion to the north and the west,
Rollo quickly added Brest, Bayeaux, Bessin, and Lemans as part of his new conquest.
In the year nine hundred and twenty seven, as Duke Rollo's life was almost done,
Rollo passed on the Duchy of Normandy to William Longsword his heir and son,
Although he was baptized as a Christian, Rollo could never really quite decide,
The old Viking warrior had a hundred prisoners sacrificed to Odin before he died.
