Poem : The Hulder

311. The Hulder

Picture
Herman Hofberg (1882)
For years the farmer had been expanding the width and breadth of his land,
Destroyed most of the forest, left only a small patch near the marsh to stand.
Then one day he felt he was being watched, could not tell quite from where,
Finally, among the fir trees, he spotted a woman who was beautiful and fair.

He caught sight of her everyday where the forest meets the edge of his farm,
Her eyes shone like the brightest stars, he felt that she meant him no harm.
The woman' s hair was tied up securely, not allowed to blow in the breeze,
He was aroused by her shapely body, and her shy mannerisms were a tease.

The farmer stood and watched her carefully, paid her attention for a while,
She was able to entice the curious farmer over with a wink and a little smile.
Her lovely fragrance was alluring, and as intoxicating as the sweetest of ale,
It blinded the farmer from seeing that protruding from under her skirt was a tail.

The farmer stood frozen in front of her, and became lost in her warm loving eyes,
The gentle curve of her lovely smile was reassuring, he did not expect a surprise.
However, the woman' s eyes had mesmerized him , and her moist lips had misled,
With sharp claws she tore him to pieces, turned the little patch of forest blood red.

Over time the forest returned, thick brush completely covered the farmer's house,
And the land was once again inhabited by animals such as reindeer and the grouse.
To this very day, if you dare, look closely into the edge of the forest and you will see,
The forest dweller, known as the Hulder, standing guard over each and every tree.
