244. The Serving Maiden
She was hard as nails, joined the men on every raid.
This maiden cursed more than most men were able,
And she could drink the heartiest man under the table.
Silkisif was a serving maiden, her body weak and frail,
She had beautiful hair, and a pretty face that was pale.
The serving maiden was always courteous and kind,
Always spoke with great respect as the warriors dined.
Borgar was a great warrior, feared and respected by all,
He was very handsome, strong, and stood rather tall.
This village chieftain was very bold, not one to be shy,
Both Fjotra and Silkisif had caught the chieftain's eye.
Fjotra was brazen, she was not afraid to return his stare,
Silkisif was timid, she could never bring herself to dare.
Borgar liked the fact that Fjotra was willing to go fast,
But he was wise enough to know that it would never last.
When Borgar began to give Silkisif all of his attention and love,
Fjotra in anger decided it was time for push to become shove.
The serving maiden was terrified, she feared for her very life,
Silkisif was now quite sure she would never be Borgar' s wife.
Then one day Fjotra drew her sword, and threatened to kill,
Silkisif set her drink down, which she was careful not to spill.
Before Fjotra, the great warrior, struck her down with her sword,
She drank down the mead that the serving maiden had poured.
Fjotra paused for a moment, then dropped her sword and fell,
She writhed on the floor, as though she were under a spell.
Silkisif stood over Fjotra, and watched the shield maiden die,
She had poisoned her drinking horn with a fatal amount of lye.
Fjotra looked up with pleading eyes before her agonizing death,
And the hall went silent as the shield maiden took her last breath.
Borgar looked at Silkisif with surprise and respect before he said :
" You are both bold and beautiful, I believe it is you I shall wed ! "
