Chapter : 1
Advances And Retreats
Like a good hunter, Ullr sensed that he was being watched, and glanced over his shoulder. As his eyes met Njord's, they narrowed in anger. Njord took one step forward towards Ullr before turning and walking away. The archer God smiled sarcastically as Njord disappeared in the distance. " He did not even care enough to say goodbye to his own wife. " he thought to himself as he looked over at Skadhi, who was distraught, and crying over the loss of her animal friends. Ullr put his arm over her shoulder, and gave her a little kiss on the cheek to console her.
Skadhi felt terrible that so many of her forest friends had died in the traps that she had helped to construct. She rarely allowed herself the luxury of tears, but her sorrow over the great multitude of lifeless animals was overwhelming, and she could not hold back the tears as they welled up. As she lowered her head to wipe away a tear she felt Ullr place his arm around her. As he kissed her on the cheek she spun around out of his grasp, and stood before the archer God in anger and shock. " My friend, you take too many liberties with me ! I am a married woman with children and grandchildren. I value your friendship more than you know, but I cannot accept your advances, and think that it is now time for you to leave ! " Skadhi told him in a scolding tone.
Ullr was disappointed, but not very surprised. Skadhi was a very honorable woman who stuck to her principles no matter the cost. He knew that to question her reasons would jeopardize his friendship with her, so he simply apologized, said his goodbyes, and left her alone. Before she was out of sight Ullr turned and took one last look at Skadhi. " What a wonderful woman !" he said out loud as he watched her lovingly lift a deer out of one of the traps. " Njord is a damn fool ! " he added as he turned, and headed back to his home in Ydalir.
As Skadhi carefully buried her animal friends, she had plenty of time to contemplate all that had come to pass lately. It took her a while to go over in her mind all the death and destruction that had taken place recently, but when she finally came to terms with all that had come to pass, she suddenly realized that her husband had left without saying a word to her. " He is angry with me ! " Skadhi told her little bear cub Little Growler. " I have spent too much time lately immersed in death and war, and too little time with my husband and my children. " she added. As if to comfort Skadhi, Little Growler rubbed himself up against her leg. The Ski Goddess reached down and rubbed her little friends furry head, and then looked deep into its big brown eyes. " I think I will rest a few days, and then go to see my husband, and make amends for my absences. " she told her little friend as she kissed him on the nose. Little Growler jumped up and down at the thought of going on a journey, which made Skadhi smile for the first time all day. But her smile disappeared as soon as she went back to burying the forest animals.
