The Perfect Union
Odin wanted a son ! A strong and fierce young warrior who could stand up to the Jotuns, and keep the Giants from attacking the new home of his children Ask and Embla. What Odin needed was a mate ! Odin had had his eyes on a young Giantess named Frigga, who was the daughter of the Jotun Fjorgynn, for some time now. He loved her very much, and planned to marry her someday, but he felt that she was not tough enough to produce a warrior stronger than had ever been seen in all of the nine worlds. Odin decided that it was time to search throughout these nine worlds to produce, not only an heir to his Asgardian throne, but to defend both of his realms.
One day when Odin was feeling especially melancholy he changed himself into the sky itself, and roamed above the land of Midgard, to see how his children Ask and Embla, and their children were doing. As he floated high above the great orb, known as Mother Earth Jord, he was very impressed by her wonderful attributes. She was strong. Very strong ! And yet at the same time she was very vulnerable, and beautiful. Odin fell in love with her at once ! He adored the great heights of her tallest mountains, and was astonished by the depths of her vast blue oceans. What Odin was most impressed with, however, was the great strength that she exhibited. He observed her as she shook whole regions of Midgard with tremendous earthquakes, and when she became truly angry, she poured out her fury in the form of great volcanoes, massive amounts of ash, and molten lava streams that covered whole territories, and consumed entire forests. Odin thought to himself, as he hovered over great Mother Earth Jord, that this was a woman strong enough to produce the all powerful son that he was seeking.
Odin approached Jord cautiously, and lovingly, for he knew that she was easily as strong as himself. Possibly even more so here in her own elements ! He gently caressed her with gentle breezes that he created, and brushed her with tender kisses, in the form of tiny rain drops. Odin expected her to resist his advances, but was surprised instead by her receptiveness to his gentle touch. They met on top of a great mountain, and there in the gathering darkness created by Sunna turning her back in respect, they consummated their love for one another in a sacred union.
The next morning Odin awoke to find himself lying on the sandy bank of a great river whose mouth flowed swiftly into the sea. The sky had turned a horrible blood red color, and violent lightning flashed across the sky, followed shortly thereafter with great booms of thunder that deafened great Odin. Odin stood up carefully as the Earth began to shake beneath him, and wondered if what he had done had caused this great cataclysm. Then suddenly there was a tremor so severe that it knocked Odin to the ground ! Odin grabbed hold of the sandy bank to steady himself on the shaking ground, and as he did he heard a great thunderous roar of water off in the distance. Odin trembled along with the ground as he realized it was getting louder and louder. Then on the edge of the horizon Odin saw a great wall of water coming down the river towards the sea. As it became closer Odin saw the crest of the wave as it approached. Cradled in the crest of the wave was a child, who' s cries could be heard above the crash of thunder and the roar of water. Odin feared for his life as the towering wave came closer, but there was no where to go, and not enough time, even if there was a place of safety to be reached. Odin regained his footing and stood proudly before the wave, to meet his own death, but just as the wave was about to hit it dissipated, and gently washed the child ashore.
Odin picked up the child, and marveled at how perfect it was ! The baby's huge muscular frame was topped by the brightest red hair Odin had ever seen. And as the child cried he noticed that its eyes glowed bright red, just like lava from the volcanoes he had seen, in anger as well. When Odin blessed the child with a kiss, the sky turned bright blue, and the world was bathed in warming sunshine once again, as Sunna smiled down upon them. From behind Odin, at the edge of the river bank a tree slowly transformed into a beautiful young woman, with hair the color of autumn leaves. As she approached Odin, she held out her arms to receive the child, and as she did Jord asked : " What shall we name our child my love ? " Odin smiled as he handed her their baby : " We shall name him Thor the Almighty ! "
Skalds to this day still sing the praises of this sacred event :
In a time so very long ago, forgotten by most,
Took place a magical tale, for which I must boast.
All - Father Odin one day, took the form of the sky,
And over Mother Earth Jord, Asgard' s leader did fly.
Odin was amazed by her beauty, and her majesty too,
From the heights of her mountains, to her oceans so blue.
He admired her great strength, and this gave him a thought,
Maybe she was the one, to give him the son that he sought.
So Odin lowered himself, till the sky touched the Earth,
And where Odin and Jord met, there was a sacred birth.
Out of this perfect union, was born a child on her shore,
Red haired and immensely strong, Odin named his son Thor.
