They say the recent shootings in Arizona have nothing to do with the caustic verbage that was thrown around during the last election, and they are right. One look at that animal and you can see he is not in his right mind. But how much longer will it be before some mentally unstable person becomes unhinged and finds, "purpose", with one side or the other in a debate, and decides that words alone are not enough. Does somebody have to die to prove this can happen ? When you throw gas onto a fire someone is sure to get burned !
Our anger level has been ramped up over the past few years, in America, and no longer seems to be in line with the situation at hand. Examples : A fender bender turns into a knifing; two fans at a football game, rooting for different teams, get into a fist fight; someone gets mad at the I.R.S. and flies a small plane into their building; or a worker goes to work after being fired and shoots former co - workers the next day. Sound familiar ? Just check the daily news. And these are not rare occurences any more ! Oh no my friends, you see it more and more lately ! From the Columbine High School massacre, and the Virginia Tech shooter, to the recent shootings in Tucson, Arizona, unhinged people are mad as hell and they are not taking it any more ! We now live in a culture that has as much violence as in the days of the Vikings. Remember, Eric the Red had to move several times due to violent acts on his part. But we live in a civilized world now. Don't we ?
Why can't people meet with each other, look each other in the eyes, and talk things out like the intelligent human beings we are supposed to be. Have we become so self - absorbed and selfish that we can't give a little to get a little. This angry phenomenom is not happening all over the world. CNN recently did two CNN Polls on the safest places to live, and the highest standard of living. Iceland was the safest, and Norway the richest ( Highest average income ). There seems to be a correlation between the distribution of wealth and contentment and safety. All Scandinavian countries placed high on the lists, so maybe there is something to be learned from them.
We need to calm down, step back, and re - assess who we are, what we want, and where we are going. We need to listen to each other and at least try to understand others opinions, instead of dismissing them, and then look for common ground with which to meet in the middle to find solutions. If we don't the Western World is going to go the way of the Roman Empire and destroy itself from within. But it is not too late yet, the foundation of our society has a few cracks, but with a little time, a little patience, a little love and understanding, we can make our social and political structure strong once again. We just need to talk instead of yelling, listen instead of ignoring, be truthful instead of lying, and give honor and respect to those who honor and respect us. It won't be easy, but it seems that nothing good in life ever is. May the Gods and Goddesses help us through these hard times and give us the strength to do, and say, what is right !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
