Everyone keeps looking for the Holy Grail, The Fountain of Youth, and Shangri - La, or other symbols from the outside to strengthen their souls and their wills. I can tell you now my friends that this strength must come from within. No cross, no star of David, no Thor's Hammer, no Valknut, no Runestone, no symbol ever thought up, then made, can ever change us , or give us the strength and resolve to do what is right and what is good. The struggle to overcome weakness takes place within all of us every second of every day. It is a moral war that we must fight, and win, to be the people that the Gods and Goddesses want us to be.
Whether it is something as simple as giving up your seat on the subway to an elderly person, or slowing down as not to run a red light, these decisions make us who we are, and how we are perceived by other people, our community, and our Gods and Goddesses. If you think no one is watching, you are oh so wrong my friends. And I am not speaking about a red light camera, or a cell phone camera. I am referring of course to our Gods and Goddesses ! Every act of insincerity, every moment of rudeness, every betrayal, every lie, and all the pain we cause others, damages our souls. These "scars" cannot be seen by us here in our limited human world, but the Gods and Goddesses will judge us by the damage they see scratched upon our souls. This is something I am sure of because it is something the Triad has made very clear to me.
What I am not clear on is whether an equal act of kindness does anything to erase these marks, or whether the Gods and Goddesses simply expect us to do what is right, period. I think the Gods make the issue cloudy so that we have to have "faith" in their kindness when making certain decisions. A good example is : What would you do if you found a twenty dollar bill laying on the floor that you knew did not belong to you. Would you have the strength of will to ask the people around you if it were theirs ? Or would you simply pocket the money because they might not tell you the truth anyway ? Either way you are not doing anything wrong legally. But maybe great All - Father is testing you ? Trying to discover the real you ! My take on this a simple one, I did not earn the money and therefore have no Gods given right to it, so I would ask. But ask a hundred people the same question and you will probably get 25 or 30 different responses.
This is because we all have different ways of interpreting the moral battles that we fight within us. We also all have a different moral line drawn in the sand that we use as our demarcation line between right and wrong. Right and wrong is not always as black and white as some would have you believe. We all look at the world through different eyes and different senses. And we don't always win these moral wars that we fight. Sometimes we are blinded by greed, jealousy, and hatred. Hopefully we catch ourselves at some point and make amends for the harm that we have caused. Otherwise the Gods and Goddesess will make us pay !
So the next time you grab your Thor's hammer, Valknut, Runestone, etc...., remember that these medallions are only reminders of who we should be, and how we should act. The strength to do what is right does not come from a symbol, or a necklace, but from the strength of will, hopefully, based upon our Asatru beliefs and ethics. These reside in that war zone that exists in all of us. They act as our shield and our sword to defend us, against our own bad judgements. It is a battle that we fight internally every single day of our lives. Let us all try our best to win these battles, and be the people that our Gods and Goddesses want, and expect us to be !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
