The Angry Landvaettir
The little Landvaettir was confused ! Why wasn' t this human child afraid of the horrible images he had turned the beetle into ? He had placed the ugliest, scariest face, he could project on to the insect, and yet the child, instead of being afraid seemed to be amused by its ugliness ! After several more attempts at scaring the child, which included making the insect breathe fire, and changing the color of the black insect to bright red, he realized that this child would simply not scare that easily. The Landvaettir then turned the insect's head back into his own face. " Why are you not afraid of me human ! ? " he demanded in a high squeaky voice. Anika began to giggle again when she saw the little white face appear on the bug. " Oh, my ! You can talk ! " she shouted with a surprised look on her face. The little face on the bug furrowed its brows and asked again : " Why are you not afraid of me !?" Anika frowned at the little white face that stared up at her. " Why ? Are you trying to frighten me ? " she asked innocently. " Why ! You are asking me why !! " he shouted back at her. " Yes . " Anika replied sweetly. The Landvaettir was caught off guard by her innocence, and had to think for a moment. " Well...... it..... it is because you humans have come to my land, and dug up my grass, and my flowers, and replaced them with that black flat rock that nothing will grow on . " he told her in a calmer tone. " Why must you humans destroy that which is beautiful ?! " he added.
Little Anika thought for a moment, and then giggled. " Do you mean, why did they build the park her ? " she asked right back. " I do not know what that means, but I want to know why you have come here to my land ! " he asked much more forcefully. " Don' t you know ? It is because your land is the most beautiful in the whole area ! " she told him with a huge smile. The little white head screamed in frustration, and then the insects head returned. As Anika placed the little beetle back on the ground where she found it, she noticed a shimmering figure sitting on a rock not far from her above the stream. Although she could see the outline of the figure she could also see right through it to the rock beyond. " Oh, you are pretty ! What are you ? " Anika asked the figure.
The Landvaettir froze ! " You can see me ! How can you see me ? " he asked. " Of course I see you . You're silly ! I see you right there on the rock ! " Anika told him. "Hmm.... it has been a very very long time since anyone was able to see me who I did not want to see me. Well.... that is not the problem right now. " he told her trying to shake off his confusion. Then the Landvaettir thought back to what she had said previously. " Of course my land is the most beautiful in this area ! It is my duty to keep it so ! " he told her proudly. " Well, that is why they built the park here " she told him. " So we can come here and enjoy how pretty it is ! " she added when she saw him frown at her answer. Then the little creature placed his little hand on his chin and rubbed it, as though he were in deep thought. " Then what you are saying is that these humans are honoring me for my land' s beauty by stopping here . " he said slowly as though he was trying to figure out a complex problem. " I guess so ! " Anika replied. " I just think it is pretty here ! " she added .
" My name is Anika ! " the little girl said shyly. " How long have you lived here ? " she asked the little Land Wight. " How can she see me ! " he asked himself before replying. " I have been here for as long as this place has existed. I was born out of the fire of the molten rock that formed this island world. " he told her. Anika, who had no idea what he was talking about simply replied : " Oh ! " Then the Landvaettir slid off of the rock and asked : " If you come here to honor me then why do you humans make such a mess of my land while you are here ? " The Landvaettir pointed at a paper that was blowing in the breeze as Anika answered : " We don' t mean to be. I guess we are just messy ! " she told him shrugging her shoulders.
" Well, I don' t know what to do now ! I was going to scare away human visitors to my land...... however, you say this is a form of honor so maybe I should allow them to come. But I cannot have them spoiling my land ! " he said more to himself than to the little girl. " If you like I could come here after school everyday, and make sure that the park is clean ! " she told him. " You mean you would come here to my lands and pick up the mess the humans make ? Why would you do that ? " the surprised Landvaettir asked. " I don' t know....... I guess I like it here . It is fun to play in the park ! " she told him.
The Landvaettir sat back down on the rock, and thought for a moment. He looked at the little girl named Anika as though he were studying her every feature. Finally he took a deep breath and asked : " Do you promise to come often, and remove the mess the humans make ? " Anika grabbed hold of the pendant she wore around her neck : " I promise ! On my Thor's Hammer I promise ! " she told him. The Landvaettir had no idea what, " On my Thor's Hammer ", meant, but he took it as a pledge. " Then I will allow humans to come to my land and worship its beauty ! " he told her, as he proudly looked over his land. " And I will make sure that my, " park ", as you call it, is always more beautiful than any other lands." he added smugly.
Anika giggled. " Can I bring my friends to the park to meet you tomorrow ? " she asked. " No ! I am afraid that they will not be able to see me. " he answered . " Why ? " Anika asked disappointed. " Because child, only those who truly believe can see me, and sadly humans have forgotten about the spirits that protect the land, and no longer believe ! " he told her. " Oh ! I was hoping I could show you off to them. " she told him with a little pout. " Well, I have to go home now, bye ! " she shouted back at him as she mounted her bicycle. " What is your name ? " she asked as she started to pedal. " A millennium ago I was called Irmil ! " he told her. " You will not forget your promise, will you !? " he shouted as she rode off on her metal horse. " No ! I will see you tomorrow Irmil ! " she shouted over her shoulder. As Irmil walked down to the stream he made a few more flowers bloom, and thought to himself : " Yes, you will see me tomorrow won' t you little Anika ! "
