My first Ancestor Rite, after including the scrying bowl was to my mother, who passed away in 2005. My mother loved things to smell fresh and clean, and especially loved the scent of flowers. When we lived in Milltown, when I was a child, we had a huge lilac bush in the back yard that my mother would cut flowers off of and bring into the house. She would also burn scented candles, set up those solid air freshners, and spray the house as well. It always smelled wonderful ! And it is these scents that I use to connect with her spirit as I am performing the rite. In the scrying bowl I poured lilac potpourri to honor her memory, and to connect with her. As I was putting the cap back on the bottle I was startled by something I saw in the scrying bowl. What I saw was an image of my father and mother sitting at a table in either a night club, or a wedding hall. I stared at it for a moment and realized that it seemed to be animated. I figured it had to be a reflection from one of the pictures on the altar, and that ripples in the potpourri had caused the motion. But when I took a closer look there were no ripples in the bowl, and the only pictures of my mom and dad were of them both in their wedding attire, and one of my father in his Air Force uniform. The image I was seeing was of a very young couple, wearing formal evening clothes, and obviously having a great time. They also looked at each other the way couples do when they first meet, and are madly in love. Then a chill ran up my back as I began to realize that this was real, and not just some illusion.
What I actually saw I may never know, but I was too shaken to continue the Ancestor Rite for my mother. (I performed it a few days later). What I saw I think meant the following three things : 1. My father died recently, and my mother pre - deceased him by six years, and this was there way of showing me that they were reunited, and happy once again. 2. This was their way of communicating to me that when you pass you go back to the happiest time in your life, and relive those moments. 3. That not only can you communicate with those who have past, but you can see images of them, from the past and the present.
The image may have faded, but it will never fade from my mind's eye ! I will always remember them, not as they looked at the ends of their lives, but as they did in that picture.....that moment in time, that they so graciously shared with me. I have not put any liquids into the scrying bowl since, "the incident ", because I do not know what else I might see in its black depths. I am sure that along with images of beauty and love, there are also images of horror and carnage. These are things I am not ready to see !
