When Thor came to Geirrod' s fortress he was shown, as his accommodations, a filthy goat shed with only one chair in it to sit upon. Thor was tired from his long journey and sat done on the seat to rest for a while. Suddenly he became aware that he was rising up to the roof of the shed. Thor, not sure exactly what was happening, thrust Grid' s stick hard against the roof of the shed, and pushed himself as hard as he could back down to the floor. As he landed with a great thud he immediately heard frantic screaming followed by sorrowful moaning. Geirrod' s two daughters, Gjalp and Greip had been under the chair and had tried to crush Thor against the roof, but the force of Thor' s might had broken both of their backs. For the second time in a day the Giantess Grid' s stick had saved Thor' s life.
Realizing that his daughters had failed in killing the bane of the Jotuns, he had the Thunder God brought into his great hall to compete with him in games of skill. The hall was immense and to light and heat such a large structure Geirrod had burning large fires down the entire length of the building. As Thor came face to face with Geirrod, the Jotun sneered at the Prince of Asgard, then picked up a red hot bolt of iron off of the fire with a pair of tongs and threw it with all his might at him. Thor, who was already angry over the treatment he had received from the Jotun' s daughters, caught the smoking bolt in mid - air with the iron gauntlets that Grid had loaned him. With an angry snort Thor, with eyes red with fury stared down the Giant. Geirrod, sure of what was about to happen, protected himself by running behind an iron pillar . Thor threw the iron bolt with all his divine might, and the projectile hissed as it went through the pillar, and straight through the terrified Jotun killing him.
Thor had once again faced down and killed an over confident Jotun who thought they could kill the mightiest warrior of Asgard. Though the story ends here I can imagine Thor returning to Grid' s home and honoring the Giantess for the wonderful gifts that had saved his life, not once, and not twice, but three times that day. Yes, Thor may be the enemy of most Jotuns, but some like Grid, the mother of Vidar the Silent, have become welcomed and honored friends of the Thunder God !
( In the re - telling of Thor' s journey to Jotunheim I left out the fact that Snorri twice says that Thor was not traveling alone. Why Snorri ever put these passages into the story is perplexing to me because they play absolutely no role in the Thor's stay at the hall, in his battle with Geirrod' s daughters, or in his killing of the Jotun. These lines include Loki being mentioned as Thor is trying to cross the Vimur river : " Loki clung to Thor's belt of strength", and when Thor came to the fortress and was shown the goat - shed it states that Thor: " And his companions were shown the goat - shed." Possibly their part has been lost in time, or maybe Loki, Thjalfi, and Roskva did not play a large enough role in the story to warrant further mention. )
